Dr. Akanksha Gautam
I am a specialist in Endocrinology (Diabetes, Thyroid and Hormonal diseases), trained at the prestigious Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. I completed my MBBS degree from Government Medical College and Hospital, Chandigarh in 2011 and MD Medicine in 2015 from IGMC Shimla. Thereafter, I worked as a Senior Resident at GMCH Chandigarh, AIIMS New Delhi and then at Safdarjung hospital, Delhi. Subsequently, I joined DM Endocrinology course at PGIMER Chandigarh.
I have over 10 years experience of working in Medicine and Endocrinology. I am a member of the Endocrine Society (USA), European Society of Endocrinology and Indian Society of Bone and Mineral Research (ISBMR). I have several publications in national as well as international journals to my credit and have also presented my research work at various conferences. My area of expertise includes Diabetes (in adults and children), thyroid disorders, PCOD, sexual dysfunction, short stature, pubertal disorders, adrenal diseases, pituitary diseases, calcium abnormalities and osteoporosis. Working in one of the most prestigious institutes of the country has taught me the art of dealing with complicated cases with ease. Endocrinology is an ever advancing and growing field, hence staying updated with the latest knowledge and advancement is important; this is the motto of our centre as well.
I am passionate about providing holistic, quality health care to my patients. I understand that good communication is the most important part of a doctor’s job and believe that listening to patients is the key in making a personalised treatment plan.
OBESITY
Obesity is generally caused by consuming more calories than you burn off through physical activity. It may sometimes also be a feature of some underlying endocrine disorder.
PCOD
It is a hormonal disorder affecting women of reproductive age group, which leads to menstrual irregularities, excessive body hair, acne and infertility.
SHORT STATURE
If a child’s height is below the average height of his peers, it may indicate a hormonal disorder. Timely treatment leads to a normal height gain and hence ensures good physical and mental well-being.
OSTEOPOROSIS
A bone disorder where bones become weak and fragile which may lead to
fractures. Besides being a disease of old age, it may affect young people in the presence of other
chronic non-endocrine and endocrine disorders.
PITUITARY TUMOURS
Pituitary is the master endocrine gland. Its dysregulation can cause abnormal levels of prolactin, growth hormone, cortisol, gonadal hormones and even thyroid dysfunction.
ADRENAL DISORDERS
Adrenal glands produce multiple hormones which regulate blood pressure,body’s response to stress and other essential functions. Both excessive production as well as deficiency of essential hormones produce by these glands may lead to serious diseases.
Diabetes mellitus
Refers to a condition that affects how the body uses blood glucose. If not managed properly, it may lead to some serious problems including kidney diseases, nerve damage, eye problems, stroke and heart diseases.
Hormones
Hormone stability can be a delicate balancing act, which is why you want to work with a hormone specialist. Some factors that affect endocrine organs include puberty, aging, pregnancy, the environment, genetics and certain diseases and medications.
THYROID
DISORDERS
Problems can arise when the gland produces too much (hyperthyroidism) or too little thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism). It can lead to bothersome symptoms like fatigue, lethargy, somnolence, constipation and menstrual disturbances.
METABOLIC BONE DISEASES
Metabolic bone diseases are caused by genetic abnormalities that may directly or indirectly affect the bone, or by other factors (hormones, tumors, diet, or drugs) that alter bone cell function. These disorders may result in abnormal growth and development of the bones.
